Brief Facts about Dadasaheb Phalke
Dasheb Phalke was a producer-director-screenwriter who made India’s first feature-length film Raja Harishchandra in 1913.
He made 95 feature-length films and 27 short films in his career, which lasted 19 years until 1937, including his most famous works: Mohini Bhasmasur (1913), Satyavan Savitri (1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janma (1918) and Kalia Mardan (1919).
His contribution to Indian cinema was great and that is why the Government of India instituted an award in his honor.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award of Indian cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals.
The award is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke. Dadasaheb Phalke is considered as the ‘Father of Indian Cinema’ .
In October 2023, the 2021 Dadasaheb Phalke Award was given to actress Waheeda Rehman for her contribution to Indian cinema.
